Aluminium is not typically used as the primary material for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage. Instead, materials like steel and various polymers are more commonly used for this purpose. However, aluminium is an incredibly useful material for carbon dioxide storage.
Aluminium’s properties make it useful in certain aspects of carbon dioxide storage processes:

Corrosion / Rust Resistance:
Aluminum has a high resistance to corrosion, especially when compared to steel. This property can be advantageous in environments where CO2 might interact with storage containers or equipment, as it reduces the risk of degradation over time. One of the downsides to steel bottles is the risk of rust. Most steel carbon dioxide storage bottles come with a residual pressure device (RPD) to prevent water from entering the inside of the cylinder. When these devices are missing the cylinder’s stamp date is halved and the bottle is at rust of internal rusting.

Lightweight:
Aluminum is lightweight compared to many other metals, which can be beneficial in applications where weight is a concern, such as in portable or mobile CO2 capture systems. This is valuable when it comes to carting many of the larger cylinders to be swapped or refilled. It turns what would otherwise require a trolley or special transport into a single person job.
